Male Black-backed Woodpecker at nest cavity near
Prince George BC -
June 1, 2006. The nest is in a dying lodgpole pine Pinus
contorta. Many trees of this species have been killed in
recent years by mountain pine beetle. Increased availability of
food and nest sites have apparently led to a larger population of
woodpeckers. |
