Apparent hybrid second (or possibly third) winter bird at Esquimalt Lagoon, Colwood BC - January 8 & 9, 2003.  Most likely an hybrid Glaucous-winged x Western Gull.  The common large gull species in this area is the Glaucous-winged Gull Larus glaucescens.  The bird photographed caught my attention as it had very dark wingtips and dark tail band with contrasting white rump and base of tail.  These features are more consistent with second winter Western Gulls Larus occidentalis and Slaty-backed Gulls Larus schistisagus.  The bird was very similar structurally to adjacent Glaucous-winged Gulls, and its mantle colour matched Glaucous-wing.  Scroll down to view two  more images.
