Identification Most of the birds above are adult California Gulls. They have gray-green legs and most have the red/black gonydeal spot. Some appear darker in the mantle than others, with the darker ones appearing more streaked on the head, so we may have both Larus californicus californicus (dark) and Larus californicus albertaensis (paler). The immature bird at the top left (labeled #1) is a second winter Thayer's Gull Larus thayeri, slightly larger than the Californias, pale mottled on the mantle and quite a white head. Legs are grayish pink. The big bruiser in the foreground (labeled #2) on the right is to me a Larus "incognitus", likely a second winter bird. It's about the size of a Glaucous-winged Gull, but has a massive bill. My best guess is a Glaucous x Herring Gull hybrid. |
