Adult Thayer's Gulls at Clover Point, Victoria BC - January
24,
2003. The bird on the left is very typical of adult Thayer's Gulls occurring in the Victoria area. The individual to its right is exceptionally pale and appears to have nearly acquired alternate plumage, well ahead of most other birds in the vicinity. The Iceland Gull Larus glaucoides is somewhat similar, but typically is much paler overall, particularly in the mantle and primaries. Iceland Gulls tend to have shorter, finer bills and paler eyes. The primaries tend to extend beyond the tail further than in Thayer's Gulls. Thanks to Don Cecile, Adrian Dorst, Bryan Gates and Derrick Marven for providing comments on the identity of this bird. Photographed with an Olympus C-700 Ultra Zoom at 10x optical zoom. |
