  American Avocet Identification:  
 
  • A large, long-legged, long-necked, long-billed wading bird.
  • The bill is distinctly upturned.
  • Legs blue-gray.
  • Striking black and white patterning on the body.
  • In alternate plumage (breeding season), adults are reddish-brown on the head.

  American Avocet Distribution:
