| -A trail and boardwalk take you around this delightful little wetland. Established as a nature sanctuary in the 1970s, it hosts a great variety of avifauna. For out of area birders, the main attractions are the Golden-crowned Sparrows (winter) and Anna's Hummingbirds that hang around the feeders of the nature centre. Swan Lake is a good general birding spot that boasts a few species that are generally difficult to find in Victoria and vicinity: Marsh Wren, Blue-winged Teal, Ruddy Duck, Virginia Rail and Swamp Sparrow. American Bitterns, very rare on Vancouver Island, seem to turn up here every few years. For more information on the sanctuary, check out http://swanlake.bc.ca/ |
