| Eurasian Wigeon distribution in North America, Spring 2003. Scroll down to view. |
The following maps show the spring migration distribution pattern of Eurasian Wigeon in 2003. Hybrids with American Wigeon are also included. During the winter of 2002-2003, this species was primarily in its usual haunts along the central Atlantic coast of the USA and along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to California (Click HERE for winter map). During the first week of March, birds were still more or less sedentary, with most reports coming from the wintering spots. There were fewer reports from the Atlantic coast in the period, but that may have been more a reflection of observer effort than anything else. A bit of movement was noted in the second week, with more birds turning up in northeastern OR, northeastern WA and northern ID. In the east, a male at Berlin OH was the first sign of migrant action. During the last half of March, the Eurasian Wigeon were well on their way, turning up along the Great Lakes and well into the interior of British Columbia. Southerly locales were noticeably vacated. Notice that the early April distribution pattern (click HERE) is very similar to last years map for April 1-7 (click HERE). By mid-April most birds had vacated the USA and were concentrated in Alberta and British Columbia. |

| Eurasian Wigeon distribution in North America, January to May 2002. |
The maps below show the winter distribution pattern and spring migration of Eurasian Wigeon. In January, Atlantic birds were scattered from Cape Breton south to New Jersey. There was a slight southward drift in February and March. By March, these birds were heading northward, many of them towards the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. Most had disappeared into observerless territory by early May. In the west, wintering birds were concentrated in northern California and southwestern British Columbia. In April, there was a fairly rapid departure. California birds probably moved northeast through eastern Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alberta. The substantial BC population evaporated towards the breeding grounds, or ??? |
