| Most heron species inhabit the tropics or warm temperate
regions of the world. Although Great Blue Herons are fairly common in the
neotropics, they also range into the sub arctic, with a few breeding in as
far north as southeastern Alaska. As with many other heron and egret
species, the Great Blue Heron takes to pronounced post-breeding
wanderings.
They set up residence in breeding colonies in the late winter. Even in western Canada, herons are visiting nest sites as early as February. Many colonies simply consist of loose aggregations of a few pairs. Sometimes colonies are large, with hundreds of birds in attendance. Nests are typically flimsy stick structures, perched atop branches just strong enough to hold the occupants. Click HERE to view the Great Blue Heron image gallery. |
