Bird Database Project

What are we doing?
From time to time we plan to gather and disseminate bird distribution information for selected species of North American birds.  Data for any species are welcome.  However were are currently most interested in obtaining data for the following species.

  • Turkey Vulture (British Columbia and Washington)

  • Black Swift (North America)

  • Osprey (Vancouver Island)

The information is being gathered and presented so that birders, biologists, resource managers, etc. may have a better idea of where various bird species are occurring.  The information shared her will hopefully spawn questions, research and contribution to bird conservation.

What do we plan do with the data collected?  Who will have access to the data?
We believe that relatively free access to the data is necessary for conservation purposes.  From time to time spreadsheets will be posted detailing noteworthy observations.  Most records of rarer species will be posted shortly after processing.  Unless otherwise indicated, data posted on this web site may be used without charge provided the web site (www.birdinfo.com), observers and sources are acknowledged.  Photographs and other non-text media are generally copyright by the photographers/recordists and require their permission before being used.

For species for which we hold sensitive data or large databases, the information will be released at our discretion.  Requests for this information must be in writing or by e-mail, detailing how the data will be used, how the sources will be acknowledged, and what the products will be.  We reserve the right to attach conditions to data use.  In some cases, a nominal fee for data extraction and processing will apply.  This is not a for-profit operation, so fees will be collected simply to offset the cost of these tasks.

How you can help.
As we have no staff, and are doing this in spare time, extracting data from e-mail text is not practical.  Please submit your bird observations using our data form or similar spreadsheet format.  Click HERE to download the data form and instructions.  Thank you!

Who is coordinating this project?
The North American Bird Database Project is being coordinated by Michael G. Shepard, RPBio and Paul Levesque, BIT.  We are members of the Association of Professional Biologists of British Columbia and are bound by a code of ethics of professional conduct.  We are conservationists by nature, and wish to have reputable information available to the general public, resource managers and decision makers.

How to contact us about the project?
